School-Expense Planner
Example values are prefilled. Check only items required now and edit the amounts; the required subtotal and gap update automatically.
| Expense | Required now? | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Supplies / books | $ | |
| Clothing / uniforms | $ | |
| Technology | $ | |
| Transportation | $ | |
| Fees / activities | $ | |
| Childcare / scheduling cost | $ | |
| Other school-related cost | $ | |
| Required-cost subtotal | $1,050 | |
| Funds already available | $ | |
| Immediate funding gap | $750 |
Separate Required From Optional
Use three buckets:
Required before school starts
Costs that cannot reasonably be delayed.
Needed later
Costs that can wait until a later paycheck or date.
Optional / upgrade
Items that are useful but not necessary for starting school.
Only the first bucket should automatically enter the immediate funding-gap calculation.
Back-to-School Spending Is Not Automatically a Student Loan
Columbus Finance materials listed college tuition expenses as a personal-loan use case. But postsecondary tuition can raise a different regulatory question from ordinary school supplies, uniforms, or K-12 expenses.
If any proceeds will be used for postsecondary tuition or other higher-education costs, tell the lender the purpose accurately so the lender can determine which disclosures and rules apply to the transaction.
This page does not present Columbus Finance as a private student-loan lender.
Compare Nonloan Resources First
Depending on the expense, check whether you can use:
- school or district supply programs;
- scholarships or aid for qualifying educational costs;
- employer or community assistance;
- used/refurbished technology;
- payment plans;
- delayed purchase of nonessential items.
Anything covered elsewhere reduces the amount that would need to be borrowed.
If a Personal Loan Still Fits
Use the resulting funding gap and compare the amount pages. The site’s $500–$5,000 planning range does not guarantee that each amount is available to every applicant.
What to Ask the Branch
- Does this location currently handle personal/installment loans?
- Is the amount I need available?
- What APR and fees apply?
- What is the payment schedule?
- What is total repayment?
- Does the intended use change any disclosure requirement?
- What information is required for the application?
Back-to-School vs. Personal Loans
This page owns the school-expense scenario. Personal Loans owns the broader category/use-case intent.
Local Next Step
Find a Columbus Finance location, call first, and confirm the current application method.
Know the required-cost gap?
Start with that amount, not the total wish-list.
Build a “Now / Later / Optional” Purchase Plan
A school-shopping list often mixes urgent and nonurgent costs. Split it before deciding whether to borrow.
Buy now
Items required for the first days or weeks of school.
Buy later
Items that can wait until the need is confirmed.
Optional
Upgrades, extras, or convenience purchases.
Then recalculate the funding gap using only the buy-now column.
If Technology Is the Biggest Cost
For a laptop, tablet, or other device, compare:
- school-provided device options;
- refurbished equipment;
- repair of an existing device;
- retailer payment plans;
- the total repayment of a personal loan.
The sticker price and financed cost can be very different.
If the Expense Is Postsecondary Tuition
Be precise about the purpose during the application. Federal Regulation Z has specific rules for certain private education loans when proceeds are intended for postsecondary educational expenses. Whether those rules apply depends on the actual transaction and lender.
The website should not decide that legal classification for the branch. The correct action is to disclose the real intended use and review the documents the lender provides.
School-Year Cash-Flow Check
Before adding debt, ask whether the repayment will overlap with other predictable school-year expenses such as transportation, activities, childcare, or seasonal household costs. A smaller immediate request can be more manageable than financing an entire semester’s wish list at once.
