Step 1 — Calculate the Paycheck Gap
Example values are prefilled. Edit them to match your situation. This is a budgeting tool, not a loan quote.
Planning only. Actual approval, amount, APR, fees, payment schedule and funding timing come from the real application and agreement.
Step 2 — Understand the Product Difference
| Decision point | Payday-style borrowing | Columbus Finance installment path |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger | Cash needed before the next paycheck | A defined amount for a personal expense |
| Repayment | Often short-term and product-specific | Terms come from the installment-loan agreement |
| Reuse | Product-specific | Do not assume reusable credit |
| Application review | Provider-specific | Current branch application controls |
| Cost | Must be disclosed by provider | Must be disclosed in the Columbus Finance offer |
This page does not claim the installment loan is automatically cheaper or better for every borrower. Compare the actual cost and repayment obligation.
Important: “Payday Alternative Loan” Can Mean a Specific PAL Product
A Payday Alternative Loan (PAL) is a specific small-dollar product offered by certain federal credit unions under NCUA rules. Columbus Finance is not presented on this site as a federal credit union PAL provider.
This page uses “payday loan alternative” in the ordinary sense: another way to address the same cash shortfall.
State Context Matters
Georgia
The Georgia Department of Banking and Finance states that payday lending is illegal in Georgia. Covered small consumer installment loans of $3,000 or less are regulated separately under the Georgia Installment Loan Act.
Alabama
Alabama separately regulates deferred-presentment/payday transactions under the Deferred Presentment Services Act, Title 5, Chapter 18A.

The Columbus Finance path on this site remains the personal/installment-loan path; it is not relabeled as a payday transaction.
Compare More Than One Way to Solve the Gap
Before taking on new debt, consider whether the shortfall can be handled through:
- a payment-plan request with the biller;
- moving a nonessential expense;
- a credit-union PAL if eligible;
- employer-based earned-wage access, if available and understood;
- help from family or another noncredit source;
- a personal installment loan when the payment obligation fits the budget.
The right option depends on cost, timing, eligibility, and how repayment affects the next budget cycle.
If the Goal Is to Pay Off a High-Rate Title Pawn
Columbus Finance materials specifically documented payoff of a high-rate title pawn as a personal-loan use case. If that is your situation, compare:
- the amount needed to satisfy the title pawn;
- the total repayment remaining on that obligation;
- the actual Columbus Finance rate, fees, payment schedule, and total repayment;
- whether collateral/security applies to the new transaction.
Do not decide from the monthly payment alone.
Application Reality
Columbus Finance credit forms requested income, employment, debts, assets, residence information, and the amount/purpose of the request, and documented authorization to verify credit and employment history.
The current application and consent determine the review used today.
Questions to Ask Before Accepting
- What is the APR and finance charge?
- What fees apply?
- What is each payment and when is it due?
- How many payments are there?
- What is total repayment?
- Is collateral involved?
- What happens if a payment is late?
- Can I pay early, and what does the agreement say about doing so?
Choose the Next Step
If the remaining gap fits the Columbus Finance amount range, compare loan amounts and then choose a location.
